RELATIVE SENTENCES

Hello! In this post we are going to work on the relative sentences.

We use relative clauses to give additional information about something without starting another sentence. By combining sentences with a relative clause, your text becomes more fluent and you can avoid repeating certain words. Remember the relative pronouns: who, which, that, whose, where, when.

See the example below:

 A girl is talking to Tom. Do you know the girl? --> Do you know the girl who is talking to Tom?

PASSIVE VOICE- PAST SIMPLE

Hello!

In this post we are going to work on the passive voice in past simple tense.  The structure is as follows:

Subject + (was, were) + vb. ppio (-ed/ 3rd C) + Agent Comp.

He opened the door

The door was opened by him

Take into account that the direct object in the active sentence becomes the subject in the passive one. The subject in the active sentence becomes the agent complement in the passive one.

PASSIVE VOICE- PRESENT SIMPLE

Hi everyone!

Here we are going to work on the passive voice, present tense.  The structure is as follows:

Subject + (am, is, are) + vb. ppio (-ed/ 3rd C) + Agent Comp.

He opens the door

The door is opened by him

Take into account that the Direct Object in the active sentence becomes the subject in the passive one. The subject in the active sentence becomes the agent complement in the passive one.

The agent complement is introduced by the preposition "by" (not "for", a very common mistake). Sometimes, we don't need to write this agent complement, since it's obvious, not important or unknown. For instance:

   The police arrest the robbers --> the robbers are arrested (by the police): obvious agent complement

   We set the table --> the table is set (by us): not important agent complement

  Someone follows me home every evening--> I'm folowed home every evening (by someone): unknown agent complement

THIRD CONDITIONAL

In this post we are going to work on the third type of conditional sentences, also called "the impossible ones". We use them to talk about situacions in the past we cannot change anymore.
